Recommendations for our Guests

There’s something undeniably special about summer at Millbrook – the countryside in full bloom, long warm evenings, and the chance to really slow down and enjoy everything our beautiful corner of Devon has to offer. Whether you’re here for a romantic escape or a peaceful break with your pup, we’ve rounded up some of our favourite ways to make the most of the season.

Let’s start with one of the most important parts of any trip – the food! For laid-back bites with beautiful views, Fremington Quay Cafe is always a winner. It’s a firm favourite of ours – Kate can’t resist the chilli-loaded jacket potatoes, Bob’s all about the full English breakfast, and the kids are there for the cakes (and honestly, who can blame them?). There’s plenty of space to sit outside with your dog and enjoy the estuary views, and if you’re feeling energetic, you can even hire a bike from nearby Barnstaple and cycle a stretch of the Tarka Trail before tucking in.

If you fancy something a little different, Smoke on the Waters is a rustic barn smokehouse just a short drive away – perfect for slow-cooked BBQ and relaxed evenings. Or for a special treat, The Exeter Inn is a charming traditional pub serving excellent Sunday roasts – cosy inside, and a great option if the weather turns. The outdoor spots like The Royal George, The Boat House and Saunton Sands Hotel are all great for al fresco dining, with menus that celebrate the best of the coast and countryside.

Of course, no summer trip would be complete without some seaside time. We’re lucky to have some amazing dog-friendly beaches nearby – Saunton Sands, Northam Burrows, and Instow are all firm favourites. Whether you want to paddle with your pup, enjoy a quiet picnic, or take in the sunset, there’s a spot for everyone.

For the more adventurous, there’s plenty to get the adrenaline going. Ilfracombe Sea Safari offers a brilliant range of rib rides that let you experience the dramatic North Devon coastline from a whole new angle – whether you fancy a sunset safari, spotting seals and waterfalls, exploring hidden smugglers’ coves, or even heading out to Lundy Island for a real ocean adventure. It’s exhilarating, unforgettable, and often a highlight for our guests!

If you prefer to stay closer to shore, surfing at Saunton Sands is a must-try – and if you’re a beginner, Surf Saunton offers fantastic lessons for all ages and abilities. For something a little different, the North Devon Wake Park is great fun too. You can try your hand at wakeboarding or bounce, splash and slide your way across their inflatable aquapark. It’s a perfect option for active couples, families, or anyone who doesn’t mind getting a bit wet and laughing a lot in the process!

And don’t forget to pop by the Bickington Community Shop while you’re here – it’s a little gem packed with local produce, brilliant essentials, and some of the best homemade cakes and cream teas around. Just up the road at the Community Centre, Frisky Pheasant (yes, the same Dave who offers fabulous cocktails and grills at Tree Top Escape!) is now offering a Thursday Night Takeaway – perfect if you fancy a night off cooking and still want something utterly delicious. Keep an eye out for the week’s menu and treat yourself!
